Once your baby has arrived, you will have very little time to yourself. But, new moms need to look after themselves and make sure they eat healthy, feel healthy and energetic and tend to some areas of soreness and concern after a long pregnancy and labour. Here are some tips to help you as you adjust to becoming a new mom.

1. Essential fatty acids have been found to reduce the risk of depression. Make sure to take a supplement of fish oil or flax seed oil every day.

2.  Try eating 5 meals a day to even out your energy level.

3. Post-natal workouts are really invigorating. Try enrolling in some mom and tot classes like yoga.

4. Working out after you breastfeed will help to make your breasts feel less full.

5. If you have sore nipples, try soothing them with a warm wet washcloth or try massaging the tender areas.

6. Continue taking folic acid and prenatal vitamins. If you’re breastfeeding, your baby will continue to receive these vital nutrients.

7. If you had stitches during labour and still have some sore patches, try soaking in epsom salts to soothe the wounds. Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfate which can help draw out toxins from the body and can reduce swelling and relax muscles.

8. If you’re not getting a full nights sleep, try to nap when baby naps. It’s important to get as much sleep and rest as you can.

9. Many women wonder when it’s ok to have sex after pregnancy and labour. Don’t feel pressured. Start when you’re ready and try positions that will not place any pressure on your sensitive areas.

10. Most importantly, enjoy the company of others. Try joining a new parent group and share your new experiences with others.
